Botulinum Toxin
Every time we laugh, smile or frown, Dynamic Wrinkles are created by the contractions in our delicate facial muscles.  Over time, these ‘contractions’ leave us with what we know as frown lines, crow’s feet and laughter lines. Botulinum Toxin works by blocking impulses from the nerves to our tiny facial muscles, temporarily relaxing them so that they don’t contract, thereby softening the appearance of these lines.  While the untreated muscles react in a normal way allowing facial expressions to be unaffected, the skin itself remains smooth and unwrinkled.  The improvement can be surprisingly dramatic.

Botulinum Toxin injections have been successfully used for over a decade to treat many neurological and opthalmological disorders, such as strabismus (squint or cross eyes).

Giving Botulinum Toxin injections is simple and safe.  A very small amount is injected with a very fine needle into several locations in the face. There is minimal pain associated with this treatment as a very fine needle is used, and such a small amount of liquid used.

Treatment and recovery is usually within an hour, and you will be able to resume your normal duties immediately after treatment.  Slight temporary bruising is expected, as with any injections, but otherwise there will be no visible signs of your treatment.

Are there any side effects?
The medication can sometimes cause excessive weakness of injected or nearby muscles, rarely there can by asymmetry of facial expression, transient weakness of eye closure, or drooping of the eyelids.  The risk of any side effects depends upon the muscles injected, because Botulinum Toxin is completely reversible, any side effects are temporary, lasting only days or weeks.

Treatment with Botulinum Toxin can be carried out immediately since no patch testing is required. The effects are usually apparent 3-4 days following treatment and will last 3-4 months.  Everything will return to normal after 3-4 months.

Results with Botulinum Toxin can be amazing and can be very effectively maintain a more youthful appearance.  However, this medication works only on dynamic wrinkles, and not static wrinkles, which are unrelated to the muscles of facial expression.  If you have a combination of the two, the results can therefore be limited.

Early results from clinical trials show that less treatment is required with time, as the muscles retrain themselves, but this varies from person to person.  In addition, the effects may be less effective for patients over the age of 65.

There are also reports to suggest that some patients suffering from migraines have found a vast improvement in their condition.

This excellent and inexpensive treatment achieves superb results and is ideal for the removal of:

  • frown lines
  • crow’s feet
  • laughter lines
  • forehead creases

How wrinkles form
Your skin is constantly under attack. Each day you are exposed to an assault of wind, sun, cold and pollution. In addition, fatigue, emotional changes, hormonal swings and simply the passage of time can take their toll on your skin. These internal and external attacks combine to weaken your skin’s structure and appearance.

The skin’s structure deteriorates at the level of the dermis; the deeper living layer of the skin. When vital components of the dermis such as collagen fibres, elastin and hyaluronic acid become less abundant, the dermis is weakened, causing a noticeable impact on the appearance of the skin.

The role of hyaluronic acid and Hydra Fill
The hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in your skin, plays an important role in moisturising the skin and helps to give it elasticity and tone. It is the fundamental matter in which the collagen fibres and elastin are immersed. It is a reduction in the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin over time which contributes to skin aging.

Hydra Fill is similar to the hyaluronic acid found in skin. Injected into the dermis, it replenishes the natural hyaluronic acid and hydrates the dermis by imprisoning the water molecules and giving back to the skin its volume and initial form. In this way ageing lines are quickly reduced and the lip border instantly lifted and increased, so helping to preserve and restore a youthful looking skin.

Treatment with Hydra Fill
Hydra Fill is suitable for all skin types. After a personalized consultation and diagnosis, your practitioner will propose the most suitable treatment for you. Hydra Fill is available in three formulations, depending on the types and severity of wrinkles to be treated.

The treatment itself takes only 15 to 30 minutes and involves injecting the Hydra Fill into the dermis with a very fine needle, typically only a few millimetres beneath the surface of the skin. The process is usually painless although an anaesthetic may sometimes be used for increased comfort.

In the hours following injection, small red marks or slight swelling may appear temporarily. The beneficial results are visible immediately and last around 6 to 9 months as the Hydra Fill is absorbed naturally over time. To maintain the benefits simply pop into your practitioner about once or twice a year and pamper yourself with a quick Hydra Fill makeover. Being naturally-based and biocompatible, Hydra Fill is very safe.
